ShareCorps-TUC-Urban Hunger Relief:Vol Training/Mobilization

In 2006, The University Church relocated to 8 acres in a community with insufficient food access here in Toledo, Ohio. Our Community Garden Initiative's top priority is to utilize this land to fight poverty. Our purpose is threefold: #1 Growing Food. In these difficult economic times, many people are finding it hard to provide food for their families. Often, fresh fruits and vegetables are simply excluded because of cost and so nutrition problems can develop, especially among children. We grow fruits and vegetables and make these available through a variety of distribution methods to assist those in need. #2 Growing Awareness. It is estimated by the Census Bureau that 28% of people in Toledo live at or below the federally-defined poverty level and yet many people are simply unaware of the plight of their neighbors. By becoming a public presence working to combat hunger and poverty, we help make people aware of the very troubling situation in our neighborhood. #3 Growing Compassion. Once an individual becomes involved in helping others, it is our experience that compassion grows and people are changed. We hope to grow compassion within our community. The University Church is a VISTA sub-site of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks ShareCorps program.

Member Duties : Our three-member VISTA team will build and improve on a system of growing, gleaning, and distributing healthy food to the children and families of our community. Through a network of partner and volunteer organizations we hope to increase our community’s access to healthy food and thereby fight the effects of hunger and improve the health outcomes of our local elementary school children and their families. As a member of our VISTA team you will have the opportunity to research food safety and urban farming best practices in order to create written manuals. You will create interactive training modules for volunteers and help mobilize these volunteers to efficiently and safely grow and glean food as well safely store, transport, and distribute food for the community. You will research new and more efficient methods, systems, and practices for tracking food that is received and distributed.
