ShareCorps- Urban Mission- Community Food Systems
 
 
 
The Urban Mission has deep roots in the Ohio Valley. For over fifty years the Urban Mission has provided food, shelter, clothing, and other essentials to a population scarred from industry loss, educational inequality, and deep socio-economic divides within it's own community. At present, more than 2,550 families rely on the Urban Mission for one or more of its services each month. In recent years, the Urban Mission has taken steps to "rethink" its mission, tackling some of the deeper issues associated with hunger, homelessness, and poverty. Although its core programs remain, new initiatives have been introduced. In 2016, the Fresh Start initiative was launched to improve and expand services to the Ohio Valley in a more holistic, integrated way. VISTA member will have the opportunity to work within the Fresh Start initiative- primarily in the area of food justice. **Urban Mission is a VISTA sub-site of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, ShareCorps program.

Member Duties : Member will work in partnership with the Urban Mission "Urban Farming Team" to coordinate and recruit volunteers to plant, monitor, and harvest organically grown crops in our two urban farm locations. Through these sites, member will develop a "farm to table" approach for food acquisition for the Urban Mission clients. Member will build upon the partnership we have with two schools to create both an adult and student education program focused on growing and cooking food (example topics: gardening, food safety/sanitation, healthy and nutrition, and cooking/preparation. Help connect and integrate our current resources and create transformative systems to empower our neighbors to create a life of self-sustainability.
