ShareCorps-Military Vet Resource Ctr-Ohio Vet Hunger Project

Military Veterans Resource Center (MVRC) helps veterans develop self-reliance and independence by providing access to the resources they need to successfully manage life transitions. MVRC resource centers are a “safe harbor” where veterans are treated with kindness and respect. In partnership with the veteran, MVRC coaches identify barriers that affect their life transitions, and access the resources that will help them overcome the barriers. A major life barrier is hunger. We see veterans, due to under- and un-employment, illness, disability and/or age, unable to feed their families nutritious meals. To help overcome this barrier MVRC has established the Veterans Food Bank. Currently the food bank serves veterans near four urban centers in Ohio. However, veteran families living in rural areas are not being served. They must choose between buying food and paying for housing, transportation and medicines. VISTA will help to expand healthy food access to these veterans. Together with other MVRC personalized, holistic and comprehensive services, VISTA will help veterans become more self-reliant and gain greater control over their lives. MVRC is is a VISTA sub-site of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks ShareCorps program.
