College Health Corps, Northfield Union of Youth

The Northfield Union of Youth’s (NUY) mission is to give power and voice to area youth and to create a caring and enriching community. NUY advocates for youth-run initiatives, providing resources and staff for youth to achieve their own dreams and desires for their life. NUY supports and helps operate The Key, the longest-running youth-run youth center in the nation. The Key is a sacred place, away from the pressures, judgements, and performance-based measures of the adult-driven world. It is open from 3:00-10:00 pm, 365 days a year, for all youth ages 12-20 to drop-in and connect with each other, caring adults, and their community. A youth advisory board plans and implements all programming, including music, art, food, mental health, LGBTQ+ peer groups, board games, discussions, and things that haven’t yet been imagined. The youth board has identified that a growing number of “Key Kids” need better access to mental healthcare services, with a growing population experiencing mental health issues. A VISTA will help create new systems that empower at-risk youth to gain better access, and knowledge of, mental healthcare services. Additionally, a VISTA will work to create health education programs that amplify youth voice and empower youth to take control of their own well-being. ---This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program operated by Minnesota Campus Compact. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, food, and basic needs through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations. Professional development focuses on health equity, the social determinants of health, and effective partnership development. --- ***Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early. Candidates must also email a resume and cover letter.***

Member Duties : NUY is recruiting an AmeriCorps VISTA to work, in partnership with the youth leadership, on increasing access to mental healthcare services and health education program for at-risk youth. NUY’s VISTA will build systems to help educate and empower youth to understand options and resources for mental healthcare. The VISTA will help examine and identify voids in the services currently available to at-risk youth through focus groups, conversations, and networking with youth, healthcare providers, and mental health professionals. In partnership with Carleton College, the VISTA will help build solutions to these voids. Solutions could include new collaborations with healthcare providers, streamlined access for youth experiencing mental health issues, new educational programs for youth regarding mental health, or other ideas generated by the VISTA or the youth. In our 20+ years of experience, these solutions will change, and may even save, lives.
