United Way of the River Cities VISTA Outreach Coordinator
 
 
 
An integral part of the community since 1922, United Way of the River Cities’ (UWRC) partners with a diverse and united community to address the most pressing social crises facing Cabell, Lincoln, Mason, and Wayne counties in West Virginia and Lawrence County, Ohio. UWRC advances community well-being and prosperity through a mixture of strategies within the focus areas of education, income, health, and safety net services, including: supporting outcomes-driven programs developed by local agencies, convening multi-sector coalitions to stimulate broad-based collaboration, and developing its own prevention-based initiatives. AmeriCorps VISTA will help enhance the efforts of one of UWRC’s signature initiatives, The Financial Stability Partnership (FSP), a coalition of community-based organizations working together to invest in the financial security of individuals and families through the provision of tax preparation services and financial literacy education. VISTA will play an especially important role in building the infrastructure of FSP’s Opportunity Youth Program, an initiative that identifies and assist disconnected youth (ages 16 – 24) with education, employment, and stable housing. The long-term outcome of this program will be a coordinated platform to help youth succeed through intervention, mentoring, and educational reengagement. Team culture at UWRC is affable and supportive. Our staff of eleven is often running in different directions over our five-county service area, but we are always willing to come together for “all hands on deck” moments. Our VISTA worker will spend a lot of time cultivating relationships with local partners; s/he will find the community receptive and practiced at working together.

Member Duties : UWRC’s Economic Mobility VISTA will collaborate with education and employment specialists to research and assess the needs, interests and participation of disconnected youth in existing education and employment programs, evaluate program effectiveness and note any gaps. VISTA will cultivate relationships with stakeholders and community agencies to streamline service delivery and create and maintain an asset map for the benefit of all youth-serving programs. VISTA will partner with local companies to engage employee volunteers, develop a volunteer outreach plan, collaborate with UWRC and its partners to increase their capacity to recruit and manage volunteers and recommend ideas for new and expanded programming that integrates these volunteers. VISTA will also organize and assess the effectiveness of several community-wide events that address the needs of economically disadvantaged individuals and families, including Day of Action, Stuff the Bus, and/or a poverty simulation.
