Homeless Youth Systems Development Coodinator

While there is a shelter system in place in Spokane to house homeless youth, there are significant gaps in prevention-oriented services for homeless youth who aren’t living on the streets, but are bouncing from home to home. According to a recent newspaper article, there are 3,000 homeless children in Spokane County schools, with 76% of those living in “doubled up” situations. Homelessness among youth in Spokane is 33 percent higher than the statewide average. Homelessness impacts a child’s ability to learn and carries with them throughout their lives. This VISTA position will help design a community response to this problem that will create opportunities for programs and services to attract homeless youth to seek out those services on their own. This VISTA position will: develop and implement surveys of homeless youth and organizations offering services to at risk youth; improve or expand information about programs serving at risk youth population; and establish process for recruiting and managing pool of volunteers to conduct the surveys aimed at homeless youth and agencies who provide services to at risk youth.
