Jamestown Community Center - Parent Organizing VISTA

The Mission of the Jamestown Community Center is to leverage the resources of families, neighbors and community to help young people realize their full potential. For over 40 years, Jamestown has been providing safe spaces and high quality educational opportunities for low income youth. Parent leadership development and organizing is an important component of building a community where youth can thrive. This Parent Organizing VISTA position will work at Buena Vista Horace Mann k-8 school. BVHM is a Spanish Immersion school, where 75% of the student population is eligible for the federal free or reduced lunch program. The parent organizing project will identify parent leaders, conduct one on one sessions to identify issues, skills, and a framework for engagement. Parents will be led through a leadership development curriculum, and create a workplan for engagement with school decision making bodies: the parent teacher association and the school site council. Parents will identify specific issues of involvement and engagement that will lead to more equitable programs and services, more inclusive involvement by all parents, and greater participation and inclusion. The parent organizing project will work closely with the school administration and established parent leadership structures to create a workplan to increase participation of underrepresented parents, create inclusive and friendly meeting formats and practices (provide food, translation, childcare), and support and celebrate milestones and results achieved in the workplan.
