Food Recovery Verification VISTA

The objective of this project is to provide support in building FRN’s new pilot program, Food Recovery Verified (FRV). FRN will verify that food businesses meet the standards laid out by FRN for food recovery. Through Food Recovery Verified, FRN’s reach will move beyond higher education, and can involve more people and businesses to join the food recovery movement to support the larger goal of feeding more communities in need and having food recovery become a societal expectation. While FRN currently targets the higher education sector to fight food waste and feed people, there is great potential for the full efforts of the network to extend beyond colleges and universities into other sectors. FRN envisions a world where consumers, starting with college students and expanding beyond to all patrons, choose to spend their dollars at environmentally responsible establishments. FRN hopes this demand will inspire more businesses to participate in the food recovery movement and apply for official verification through the FRV program. The Food Recovery Verification (FRV) VISTA will work with FRN’s Program Department and Executive Department to build a verification/certification process with the goal to become the national standard; this national standard would exist to verify that food businesses are doing the right thing with their leftover food, all with the larger goal of diverting even more perfectly good food from landfills to feeding more people in need. Food Recovery Network has realized how much greater its impact can be if it brings together collective cross-sector interest. As more and more businesses outside of the higher education sector have been reaching out to inquire how they can also get involved with the recovery movement, FRN has realized that the time is now to build off of this momentum in order to reduce waste and feed more people in even more substantial and far-reaching ways.

Member Duties : The FRV VISTA will work with FRN’s Program Department and Executive Department to strengthen the foundation of how we process applications, the level of support we provide to clients, and to ensure we are testing our quality control measures. FRN has only begun to touch the surface of what it means to outreach the FRV program to our larger community of businesses. As more and more businesses beyond the higher education sector connect to inquire how they can also get involved with the recovery movement, FRN has realized that the time is now to build off of this momentum to reduce waste and feed more people in even more substantial and far-reaching ways.
