2017-18 Volunteer Iowa: Iowa Public Television VISTA

Iowa Public Television’s Ready for School project focuses on working with community partners in targeted communities that have opportunities to work with economically disadvantaged youth. The project is designed to provide a wealth of educational media supports focused on early literacy and math skills to help community organizations surround children with learning opportunities in order to address the learning gap for economically disadvantaged children. This program helps parents extend learning from school to the home. The VISTA will serve as a part of Volunteer Iowa's Rural Development and Opioid AmeriCorps VISTA project. Volunteer Iowa is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. VISTA members with our program have the benefit of a statewide support network of staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, fellow AmeriCorps members and a VISTA Leader. Members receive ongoing training, support, networking and professional development opportunities. SUBMIT APPLICATIONS BY 5/22/2017

Member Duties : The VISTA will develop a summer and after school curriculum that features PBS resources and research based instructional strategies that can be implemented in partner communities. IPTV’s Educational Services staff will then disseminate the resources to partner communities. The VISTA will develop a Family Literacy/Math Kits designed to foster parent and child interaction. The kits will contain quality books, activities and resources for parents to extend school learning at home. The VISTA will work with the volunteer management infrastructure and the Educational Services staff to support service delivery. This project is designed to support community partners in intervening to break the cycle of poverty by supporting early reading. Children who do not learn to read proficiently by the end of third grade are unlikely ever to read at grade level. These youngsters are at high risk for later school failure and behavioral problems, including dropping out of high school.
