Opportunity Council, Community Liaison VISTA, NWYS

Northwest Youth Services (NWYS) provides housing, employment support, and other services to at-risk, runaway, and homeless youth age 13-24. The number of young people experiencing homelessness in our community is increasing, and the AmeriCorps*VISTA member will increase NWYS’ capacity to help clients move from homeless to housed and employed. The VISTA member will build NWYS’ capacity by improving fundraising systems, expanding on our new volunteer and internship programs, and increasing NWYS’ growing visibility in the community. These activities will raise revenue and decrease costs for all NWYS programs, which will allow us to move more youth into housing and stable employment, helping them escape the cycle of poverty and become independent adults in our community.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA will support Northwest Youth Services by participating in the following capacity building activities: 1. Creating visually engaging outreach materials that clearly communicate the work NWYS does for the community to community members, partners, donors and youth. 2. Identifying media outlets and creating other innovative ways to engage local and state level media in our work. 3. Identifying and reaching out to local organizations and groups to educate them on NWYS work and schedule appearances and meetings. 4. Coordinating with local colleges to develop internships and service learning projects for students and creating job descriptions, recruiting and orienting interns. 5. Increasing volunteer retention and involvement by researching and implanting best practices for volunteer retention, establishing a quarterly thank you not system for volunteers, and planning volunteer appreciation activities.
