United Way of Geauga County VISTA Community Impact Associate

United Way of Geauga County is the premiere volunteer organization in the county, recognized and respected among business representatives and community members for collaborating with others to address community needs and provide support for local agencies. It is a fact that 1 in 13 people in Geauga live below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). 1 in 5 households or 22% of the residents of Geauga County live below 200% of the FPL and struggle with fulfilling basic needs such as housing, utilities and food. That's why United Way is helping develop programs and funding partners and programs that help to move low-income households away from the brink of crisis toward financial stability. Transportation and financial literacy are widely seen as two key barriers to self-sufficiency among low-income residents and employees in Geauga County. A lack of transportation options impedes the ability to access work, child care, food, and needed social services. A lack of basic financial knowledge also has adverse effects on the residents who need that knowledge the most. We believe that financial stability often begins with improving awareness of, and providing access to financial resources, including local, state and federal benefits designed to encourage self-sufficiency. AmeriCorps VISTA, in collaboration with our team and dozens of community partners that serve economically disadvantaged and at risk individuals and families, will develop and expand the Geauga Income Collaborative’s (GIC) Bridges2Work program, an effort to connect under-resourced individuals to educational opportunities as well as connect them to local employers who are in need of trained employees. The VISTA will also help address poverty in our community by engaging volunteers to collaborate on solutions that increase the financial stability of local residents and helping identify career pathways for underemployed and unemployed individuals who need assistance towards greater financial stability.
