CommunityGrows-Volunteer Coordinator VISTA

CommunityGrows cultivates healthy youth through growing gardens in low-income, diverse communities and providing year-round environmental, food and nutrition education, youth development, and job readiness training for underserved children and youth. We leverage environmental education in an innovative, holistic way to help young people grow up safe, healthy, and prepared to meet their full potential. Our three interconnected programs work with over 1,300 low-income 5-19 year olds each year in the high-needs San Francisco neighborhoods of the Western Addition, Bayview-Hunters Point, and the Outer Mission/Excelsior. The programs: Garden-based Environmental Education; Seed to Mouth Cooking and Nutrition; and BEETS (Band of Environmentally Educated and Employable Teens) are unique in that the same children and youth have multiple touch-points with us throughout their school years. About 50% of our youth attend more than one of our programs. We aim to engage young people to grow with us as they learn with us in the garden starting when they are in kindergarten; don an apron and learn proper knife skills with us in the kitchen as they near middle school; and take on leadership roles in our youth internship program as teenagers. Our BEETS program participants come full circle as they teach classes to the younger students, modeling positive behaviors for others, and developing leadership skills, knowledge, and the confidence that they can teach other members of their community about gardening, plant science, the environment, nutrition, healthful cooking, and more. The Volunteer Program Coordinator will play a vital role on our team by creating and implementing an amazing volunteer program, outreaching to the community, organizing special events, and working closely with our staff to strengthen our partnerships. This is a wonderful opportunity for an organized, outgoing, person who wants to make their mark on an organization and a real impact on the community.

Member Duties : The Volunteer Coordinator will create and implement a strategic program that encourages and supports volunteers’ deeper engagement in the life of our organization and with our youth. At present, our structures and procedures for volunteer engagement are not as robust as they should be. For example, we lack pathways for engaging volunteers as thought partners or for leadership roles within CG, such as Advisory Board membership or participation in committees. Tasks include: -conduct an an analysis of how volunteers have been used in the past, and how they might be utilized in new ways -create volunteer job descriptions, recruitment processes, screening tools, and training activities -create automated processes to manage volunteer calendar and respond to inquiries -develop retention strategies and volunteer appreciation programs -outreach to local and broader SF community to increase volunteer participation -plan special events for volunteers, partners and community members
