OSMRE VISTA San Juan Conservation District

San Juan Soil & Water Conservation District was formed in 1942 with the mission to protect, restore, enhance, and promote the wise use of natural resources, to promote stewardship through education, and to provide financial and administrative assistance to the citizens and groups in the District. One of the biggest needs in our District right now is the improvement of aging irrigation infrastructure which is the lifeblood of the agricultural community in the high desert of Northwest New Mexico. There are 37 irrigation ditch organizations in our area, most of which follow the acequia model, meaning they are operated by the community of irrigators, who are mainly volunteers. Planning and funding upgrades to irrigation canal infrastructure is a priority in the District because it will meet the following goals: Increase capacity of irrigation ditch organizations; improve efficiency/reliability of water delivery to struggling farmers; reduce seepage from leaking canals; reduce river diversions; and lower maintenance costs for irrigators. Because most irrigation ditches lack the capacity to seek funding individually, San Juan SWCD is seeking a VISTA volunteer to coordinate the identification of irrigation improvement needs within the District. In addition to irrigation improvements, there is a community need for information on how to improve soil health, avoid erosion, control invasive weeds, protect water quality, and maintain sustainable yields in the face of drought. The VISTA volunteer will also assist with developing educational materials and curricula for bringing this information to lower income people within the agricultural sector, as well as to low-income school districts.

Member Duties : The main task of the Agricultural Outreach Coordinator will be to engage with the agricultural community to develop a report detailing the irrigation infrastructure needs within the District, as well as a funding plan for priority projects identified in the report. This project will require outreach to farmers and irrigation companies, research of funding opportunities, and coordination with state and federal agencies. Additional tasks include supporting the mission of San Juan SWCD by developing educational materials on agricultural best management practices, promoting existing ag cost-share programs in underserved communities, training community volunteers to collect and interpret water quality data, and increasing community participation in youth environmental science educational programs.
