OSMRE VISTA Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails

The GHRT has completed Phase I and Phase II (6 miles) of the total length of 16 miles when fully completed. We are in various planning stages for Phase III and Phase IV that will eventually complete the trail. As we develop the trail we continue to restore formerly stripped areas, conserve land, add amenities along the trail including parks, picnic tables, benches interpretive signs, exercise stations, preserve cold water streams and AMD abatement. We hold community celebrations including celebrating National Trails Day and Get Outdoors Day every year, hold an annual 5/10 K and Half Marathon race, develop volunteer work parties and other community events. We engage in teaching students and community folks on ways to restore the environment including planting bare root trees, developing riparian buffers, wet lands protection, combating AMD, protecting our water shed and other environmental education. Our Scholarship program has been endowed this year with enough money to invest to provide at least (depending on market conditions) one $6,000 dollar scholarship each year to a deserving student for perpetuity. We strive to give out two to three scholarships each year so a lot of work goes into fund raising the additional dollars. To date over fifteen years we have awarded 20 scholarships to students from our area.
