North Carolina Campus Compact

The Disaster Resilience & Recovery VISTA will join NC Campus Compact’s cohort of VISTAs serving low-income communities through higher education institutions across North Carolina. Serving with University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s Office of Community and Civic Engagement, the VISTA will build university and organizational capacity to better support low-income communities disproportionately affected by Hurricane Matthew in the Pembroke and Lumberton service areas. VISTA members serving in this position should possess a strong desire to build the resiliency and capacity of underserved low-income communities and the organizations that serve them through the use of community outreach, needs assessment, volunteer mobilization, training development, and partnership building. Objectives and activities will require candidates to be strategic, innovative, compassionate, a team-player, hard-working, and goal-oriented. Prior experience living and/or working in low-income communities and/or providing essential services to vulnerable communities is preferred. Knowledge of community assessment best practices, disaster services, and volunteer development would help candidates be successful. NC Campus Compact is a statewide coalition of colleges and universities that are committed to educating civically engaged graduates and strengthening communities. These engaged campuses strive to enhance their students’ sense of responsibility, citizenship, leadership, and awareness of community, and impact the community by partnering with local organizations to address real needs. The NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA program places VISTA members at community and campus host sites to build partnerships and develop programs that leverage higher education resources to assist low-income communities.
