UCA - Pre-Health Camp Counselor
 
 
 
United Communities AmeriCorps (UCA) engages members in meaningful service designed to meet critical community needs in Coos, Douglas, Jackson and Josephine counties in beautiful Southern Oregon. UCA partners with community-based organizations, government agencies and schools to address needs relating to education, healthy futures and economic opportunity. UCA members serve full-time for 5 months, totaling 900 hours for the term of service. Interviews for all of our open positions will be conducted on a rolling basis as qualified candidates are identified, and selection may be made prior to the application deadline. Early application is strongly encouraged. Area Health Education Center of Southwest Oregon (AHECSW) works with Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) and local healthcare facilities to help solve critical issues of health access in rural areas through by helping communities develop their own healthcare workforce pipeline. The AmeriCorps member will serve as a Pre-Health Camp Counselor and lead the Exploration Summer Camps. They will provide high school students with training, mentoring, and advising on the students’ post-secondary education and professionalism as well as guide them on a team project that addresses a community health issue (65%). The member will help arrange healthcare field trips, professional trainings, and hands on activities (25%). The member will also participate in clinical observation hours to increase their knowledge of patient care and the rural healthcare environment to prepare them for mentoring youth on rural healthcare (10%).

Member Duties : 1. Provide long term one-on-one mentoring through individualized socioemotional & academic support. 2. Deliver the Bright Works Oregon Healthcare Team Summer program curriculum and assist students with building a professional portfolio and career mapping. 3. Guide students to complete a community health project that addresses a local health issue and assist in serving on the project with them. 4. Assist with arranging health related seminars, trainings, and field trips that will connect students to professionals and/or pre-health students. 5. Assist with starting a handbook and guide for future pre-health mentors to utilize and expand upon.
