2018 UCA Southern Oregon University Farm Mentor
 
 
 
Serving in Ashland, OR at Southern Oregon University (SOU), the Farm Mentor is a vital part of the Farm’s mission to inspire a generation of ecologically committed leaders who live and work sustainably in community and on the land. The Farm Mentor will: 1. find and mentor SOU students and Jackson County community members who will profit from spending quality time on the Farm; 2. advance these relationships to bring benefit to the Farm’s mission and advance the mentee’s goals; 3. support mentees in two areas: build practical skills (farming, beekeeping, vineyard management, orchard management, nutrition, cooking, business management, food security, career development in agriculture); and build healthy resilience (independence, self-reliance, creativity, problem solving, decisions with consequences, leadership, nature and horticultural therapy, finding purpose and hope, building relationships, engagement, empathy). Targeted mentees: SOU counseling services; SOU addiction recovery program; SOU Veterans Association; SOU multicultural center; SOU community food bank; Jackson County mental health and public schools. United Communities AmeriCorps (UCA) engages members in meaningful service designed to meet critical community needs in Coos, Douglas, Jackson and Josephine counties in beautiful Southern Oregon. UCA partners with community-based organizations, government agencies and schools to address needs relating to education, healthy futures and economic opportunity. UCA members serve full-time for 6 months, totaling 900 hours for the term of service. Member Duties : (1) Design a master action plan for Farm Mentorship Program (2) Outreach to local human services programs to recruit Farm mentees (3) Develop mentee cohorts designed around shared goals and needs (4) Work with mentees on Farm projects that build life skills (5) Develop tools and evaluate project effectiveness (6) Participate in Farm staff meetings and coordinate project with other Farm staff
