Cooking Matters Coordinator 2017

The Indy Hunger Network (IHN) is a collaborative organization made up of non-profit and corporate partners working on hunger relief in the Greater Indianapolis area. IHN’s three focus areas are nutrition, access, and sustainability of the food supply in our community. Many low-income people do not have the knowledge about healthy foods or the cooking skills they need to prepare healthy, home-cooked meals for their families. In 2015-16, IHN conducted a Cooking and Nutrition Education Pilot Program; classes were taught at five locations around the city, including food pantries and community centers. Participants reported improvements in their ability to stretch their dollars when shopping, prepare healthier meals, and cook more frequently after the course. The Cooking Matters Coordinator VISTA will help continue and expand the program to more sites in order to reach more people. The VISTA will develop new partnerships and assist with writing grant proposals to sustain the program long-term. The VISTA will have the opportunity to build an extensive network and gain valuable professional experience, while helping the Indy Hunger Network achieve its goal to create a system that ensures anyone who is hungry can access the nutritious food they need.
