Fresh Bucks Coordinator 2017

Fresh Bucks increases access to and the affordability of fresh fruits and vegetables at farmers’ markets for customers paying with a SNAP EBT card (formerly called food stamps). For every dollar a SNAP recipient spends on fruits and vegetables at a participating farmers’ market, her or she will receive a dollar-for-dollar match up to $20, increasing their purchasing power and increasing sales for Indiana farmers. The Fresh Bucks program was developed and implemented by an Indy Hunger Network VISTA in 2014 and has expanded to 12 markets in the greater Indianapolis area. The new AmeriCorps VISTA will coordinate the Fresh Bucks program at the existing farmers’ markets while working to expand the program at additional farmers’ markets and into two retail grocers in cooperation with Gleaners Food Bank. The VISTA will be responsible for three vital parts of the program: community outreach, recording and analyzing performance at farmers’ markets, and expanding to new outlets. Specific tasks will include: • conducting research into incentive programs and targeting areas of low food access • assisting farmers’ markets to become SNAP authorized • expanding Fresh Bucks to other farmers’ markets, mobile markets, and retail spaces • organizing quarterly stakeholder meetings • collecting, analyzing, and reporting monthly performance data • developing reports for coalition partners to track progress • implementation of marketing/outreach plan • analyzing data from the two new grocery outlets to help determine the feasibility of expanding into additional retail grocers. This position may also collaborate on nutrition education projects within the Indy Hunger Network. The VISTA will have the opportunity to build an extensive network and gain valuable professional experience, as well as to assist the Indy Hunger Network achieve its goal to create a system that ensures anyone who is hungry can access the nutritious food they need.
