The SEED Adult & Family Learning Comm.- Outreach & Dev Coor

The SEED is foundationally an adult English language and literacy program, although our work extends far beyond simply teaching English. Our language classes intend to invite learners into a dialogue between themselves, their beliefs, their experiences, and the world around them. We are committed through our language class to building a deeper understanding of our identities in and with the world. This dialogue includes spending time in the larger community, exposing ourselves to new experiences in the Austin area, which increases feelings of ownership on the part of the folks in our program, some of whom have lived in Austin for years or even decades. Our English language learning necessarily changes based on the assets, needs, and passions of the learners in the room, so it is very dynamic. We are also working to build a multigenerational program that serves both parent and child. Children are invited into an educational space where they can interact with others, engage with basic content, and develop early academic awareness. Their parents - aside from being able to focus on their English learning - also work to better support all their children in development, including working with the schools.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will help locate, shape, and pursue these opportunities for increased impact. We hope to capitalize on the strengths of the member, while developing areas in which the member hopes to grow. The details will depend upon the member. As a very small organization without a far-reaching reputation, however, it is clear that organizational outreach is of great importance. We have many of the established media through which we might demonstrate the power of our work, although it has proven to be challenging to get content out to relevant communities. The member will utilize current networks as well as build new strategies to reaching larger audiences through sharing writing, photos, videos and other media. It is our belief that the increased awareness of our program will lead to increased opportunities for funding, for creative partnerships, and for other kinds of support.
