Welcome San José Civic Engagement and Awareness VISTA

Public Allies mission is to create a just and equitable society and the diverse leadership to sustain it. This initiative addresses federal priorities around poverty alleviation and participation of New Americans by increasing the access of vulnerable populations to services and leadership opportunities. This initiative supports cities and counties committed to building “welcoming communities” that strive to bring immigrants, refugees, and native-born residents together to create a positive environment for all by removing the barriers refugees and new Americans face to economic prosperity. The Welcoming Communities Corps VISTA program also provides leadership development training to diverse new leaders.

Member Duties : The Welcoming San Jose Community VISTA will develop projects, engage collaborative partners, and increase awareness of local efforts to improve linguistic integration, economic integration, home ownership and civic participation of new Americans such that poverty among refugees and immigrants decreases in participating municipalities. The VISTA will accomplish this by identifying linguistic and cultural barriers to inclusion for City services for immigrant residents and developing a plan to mitigate these barriers; increasing immigrant participation in civic engagement activities; and expanding access to information and resources about the naturalization process.
