SAReads

SAReads is successfully coordinating partners and leveraging collaborative efforts to deliver cost-effective, research based programs, including volunteer reading tutor program, city wide book drive, and a centralized book bank serving nonprofits and area schools. Southwest ISD provides access to their facilities and support from principals, teachers and reading specialists, while trained SAReads tutors from local universities and businesses work with students in schools. Each student receives tutoring at least once per week over the sixteen-week period, which coincides with the academic year. Students receive books to take home prior to winter break, spring break and summer vacation to practice reading and start their home library. SAReads currently has 11 locations, providing quality literacy skill-building programs for San Antonio’s at-risk student population, and demonstrating success in the reading improvements of those children. Students are assessed 3 times per year by their teachers and SAReads receives this data from the district for program assessment and student tracking. Students may participate in the program from kindergarten through 3rd grade.
