MTCC Missoula Urban Demonstration Project
MUD believes education, demonstration, and celebration of urban sustainable living will create equitable communities and healthy ecosystems. MUD promotes urban sustainable living through hands-on learning, resource sharing, and community engagement. According to Montana Office of Public Instruction only 79.6% of low income Montana students graduate from high school compared to an overall graduation rate of 86%. Research shows that outside the classroom learning is just as important as inside the classroom learning to help students succeed: collaborative learning and active engagement learning improve learning outcomes across the board. In a Missoula-area study of health equity titled "Missoula Invest Health: A Tale of Three Neighborhoods," the River Road neighborhood is one of the three lowest-income neighborhoods identified. The River Road Neighborhood is flagged for having persistent poverty across generations. The MUD VISTA will help implement hands-on, community based learning for low-income youth to engage in their communities and in learning. High-quality curricular and co-curricular civic engagement is positively correlated with student success in K-12 schools, community colleges, and public and private four-year colleges and universities (Grantmakers for Education, 2010; Myer, 2003). Community-based learning also has a strong, positive effect on student retention: The effect concerning student retention and academics include a positive impact such as an improved ability to apply what is learned to the “real world,” increased abilities in understanding complexities, problem analysis, critical thinking and cognitive development (Eyler, et. al., 2001). This project hopes to implement programming to increase low income student success and graduation rates.
