Between 2014 and 2018, STEM jobs in Montana have been expected to grow 21%. Unfortunately, women in Montana are not completing STEM degrees and entering those well-paying fields at the same rates as men. Getting underserved young women interested and engaged in STEM topics early in their educational lives is critical to closing the wage gap. Engaging low-income young women in STEM opportunities affords them the chance to pursue well-paying professions where women, and especially low-income women, are routinely underrepresented. Montana ranks a devastating 45th in the nation for median pay disparity. The Equal Pay Task Force has hosted occasional wage negotiation training's for women. However, the Montana community – especially veterans, Native Americans, and underserved groups – need consistent access to a program built and customized to the geography, scheduling needs, and circumstances of Montanans who have a critical need for tools and techniques to advocate for their pay and change the course of their financial futures. The connection between poverty and the Montana pay gap is staggering. Over a lifetime, the average full-time working woman in Montana loses more than $300,000 to the pay gap – that’s more than $10,000 women lose to the pay gap each and every year of their working lives. Women comprise 47% of Montana’s labor force, which means the wage gap in Montana impacts the financial health of more than 246,000 Montana women, and countless more families and children.

Member Duties : Develop relationships with campus partners at The University of Montana, Montana State University and other public, private and tribal colleges in the state to promote STEM programming and opportunities; Help develop the STEM website to allow women to access STEM programs, events, and opportunities across the state; Develop new STEM component of workforce conferences to be held on the campuses of MSU and UM as well as two-year and tribal campuses -cater content and advertising to low income students; Update and disseminate previous VISTA’s Wage Negotiation training and expand resources by producing a more comprehensive E-Training Component for low income women to negotiate higher wages: website, video, wage negotiation simulations, etc. using current labor market information on job and wage opportunities in their communities;
