TPWD- Sheldon Lake State Park

Texas Parks & Wildlife Department's mission is to manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. Situated in Houston, Texas, Sheldon Lake State Park is in a vibrant, diverse, and growing metropolis. The park’s location affords the community a refuge to escape into nature and enjoy camping, fishing, hiking, water activities, and experience our natural and cultural resources. This VISTA project will seek to provide increased access to the benefits of the outdoors to low income communities by developing and promoting outdoor learning opportunities and providing natural resource conservation career and volunteer training. Some of the specific project activities that a VISTA member will lead include, but are not limited to, implementing service learning programs with local high schools and middle schools, developing volunteer outreach, recruitment and management tools, creating park specific curriculums to complement academic targets, developing a strong outreach program, and creating partnerships with local schools, community organizations, and businesses. This project expects to benefit thousands of low income youth, veterans, and their families. With over 1 million residents living within the Houston metropolitan area, the potential positive impact of this project is extraordinary, for both the community and for the VISTA’s skills, networking, and professional development. We are looking for a VISTA candidate who is self-driven, engaging and comfortable working with children, an experienced public speaker, and is culturally sensitive. Preferred: Bilingual in English and Spanish.
