SCA MA Forests and Parks AmeriCorps

This position is part of the SCA MA Forests and Parks AmeriCorps program and partners with state, federal and non-profit agencies to address the conservation needs of the commonwealth of Massachusetts. Corps members serve on a day to day basis with the partner host site and then get together with the larger Corps regularly for trainings, service projects, and regional events. The host site for this position is the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). DCR is responsible for the management, maintenance and operation of public lands, forests, beaches, campgrounds, scenic vistas, historic properties, and heritage sites in hundreds of communities across Massachusetts. The internship will focus on enhancing the visitor experience in DCR parks by improving services, programming and the maintenance and preservation of our historic properties and landscapes. The candidate will be a member of DCR Preservation & Stewardship Crew and will be immersed in various parks, learning in a “hands on” way about park operations, programming, preservation and stewardship. Crew will be based out of Wompatuck State Park in Hingham, MA. Work will include working alongside park staff to operate parks, maintain facilities and foster a better understanding of local history. The major focus of the internship will be learning practical historic preservation skills and then applying these skills to historic buildings in the DCR inventory in need of maintenance. A sampling of practical experiences that crew members can expect throughout this internship will include: designing and delivering public recreational and interpretive programs, complete 4-6 small preservation/rehabilitation projects on DCR buildings, complete 1-2 larger scale Historic Building preservation projects on DCR buildings.
