2017-18 Volunteer Iowa: ICAA Community Engagement VISTA
 
 
 
Iowa Community Action Association (ICAA) is the premier force ensuring those with less, achieve more. ICAA member agencies are the 17 Community Action Agencies (CAA) serving all 99 counties in Iowa. CAAs offer a wide variety of programs for individuals and families with a limited income. In 2015, CAAs served over 325,000 individuals! You can help us increase the effectiveness of CAAs! A VISTA is needed to expand the Poverty Awareness Storybank, a series of mini-movies and stories that disprove stereotypes of people living in poverty; the Embrace Iowa program, a state-wide campaign that secures donations from 1000's of Iowans; and a state-wide volunteer engagement project. Throughout your year of service you will gather stories, develop quotes, graphics, and videos for the Storybank. You will engage CAAs, finding out how they engage volunteers and catalog state-wide volunteer best-practices for the CAA network. Additionally, you will create tools to increase contributions from community members and sponsors to expand the Embrace Iowa program. Bring your marketing, communication, and leadership skills to spread the word about the impact of Community Action in Iowa! The VISTA will serve as a part of ICVS’ Volunteer Iowa Rural Development and Opioid AmeriCorps VISTA Program. ICVS is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. VISTA members with our program have the benefit of a statewide support network of ICVS staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, fellow AmeriCorps VISTA members and a VISTA Leader. Members receive ongoing training, support, networking, and professional development opportunities.

Member Duties : The VISTA will be assigned to three significant projects: Poverty Awareness Storybank, Embrace Iowa, and volunteer engagement. The VISTA will develop Storybank materials (quotes, graphics, videos, narratives) from interviews to increase the public’s awareness of poverty in Iowa and the impact of programs offered by Community Action Agencies (CAA). The VISTA will identify any gaps in the materials and create a plan to address those gaps. The VISTA will also create tools to increase contributions to Embrace Iowa. This will increase resources for individuals and families to access necessary items not covered by other assistance programs. The VISTA will do this by utilizing the Storybank framework to create short quotes, 6-word stories, and a content calendar. The VISTA will also assess and catalog volunteer engagement best-practices. This will be done by assessing how CAAs engage volunteers and develop volunteer engagement materials (position descriptions, recruitment, outreach).
