Healthy Hub at Palo Alto College - VISTA

Since 1985, Palo Alto College (PAC), a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution, has been a pillar of the urban south San Antonio and rural South Texas area -- a historically impoverished, educationally under-served, and predominantly Hispanic community. To further exacerbate poverty issues, the South Side of San Antonio is considered a “Food Desert” by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Lack of access to nutritious foods contributes to a poor diet and has led to higher levels of obesity and other diet-related diseases in the San Antonio and Bexar County community. The Healthy Hub Project at PAC is an extension of the college’s “mission to inspire, empower, and educate our community for leadership and success.” With the coordination help of VISTA members, the project will be driven by partnerships with community leaders and organizations to improve the health, education, and economic standing of the community by expanding the availability of nutritious and affordable food. We aim to be a catalyst for improving health outlooks for the South Side of San Antonio, with the community garden as a shining focal point, complete with outdoor teaching and demonstration spaces. Health related workshops, classes, and activities in the areas of education and research, community outreach, social resources, and health and wellness relevant and culturally attuned to the needs of the area will drive the Healthy Hub Project. The focus will be on improving food access, combating obesity and chronic disease, and access to health care resources including food insecurity screenings, wellness workshops, community cooking and fitness classes, farmer’s markets, and wide-ranging strategies aimed at eating nutritiously and being active.
