OSMRE VISTA HistoriCorps

HistoriCorps saves and sustains historic places for public benefit through partnerships that foster public involvement, engage volunteers and provide training and education. Since 2009, volunteers have worked on the preservation of 200+ historic buildings in 23 states. Several of these rehabilitations have been structures associated with historic mines. The Mining Initiative seeks to focus HistoriCorps’ partnership-based model on mining legacy communities - those which thrived during hard-rock mining’s heyday, and have seen economic decline since the mines played out. What were once assets are now liabilities, and the Mining Initiative will work with these communities to turn these liabilities once again into assets. The basic premise is that legacy mining communities are well positioned to transform into cultural heritage tourism-based economies, and the rehabilitation of their historic mines to make them safe and attractive for visitation can be a key driver of this transformation. Because of several leading institutions and the Climax Molybdenum Mine, Leadville, CO, a National Historic Landmark, will be the 1st community with whom we work, building relationships with existing community organizations involved in community and economic development will be the 1st step toward getting community consensus on the mine rehabilitation strategy. The project will incorporate all aspects of HistoriCorps’ mission through the formation of key partnerships within and around the community. HistoriCorps’ current partnerships with the National Forest Service and other national and local organizations will be the platform from which projects are chosen and funding put in place. With these partners as a springboard, the VISTA and HistoriCorps will empower local leaders and actively engage them in developing projects and funding sources to execute the strategy. Applications are reviewed and the position will be filled on a rolling basis. Please apply early to be considered.
