BackPack Assistant Coordinator - Three Square Food Bank
Each Friday at 10 schools in Las Vegas, 321 children who are severely in need of supplemental food are provided with child-friendly, nutritious foods through the BackPack Program. The BackPack Program and the supplemental foods that it provides enable children to have the energy and nutrients they need to play, grow and learn. In the fall, Three Square and its community partners will expand the BackPack Program to all 210 elementary and 59 middle schools in Clark County providing an estimated 6,000 BackPacks per week to children in need of supplemental food. As an AmeriCorps member, you will develop, organize and facilitate the logistical processes needed to support an expansion of this worthwhile program. You will work with Three Square staff to efficiently manage community volunteers as they prepare BackPacks and ensure that each school receives the proper number of bags. You will help develop a new aspect of the BackPack Program designed specifically for high school students. Because high school students have different food needs or may be embarrassed to receive assistance in the form of a BackPack, you will work with high school administration, community leaders and high school students to develop a BackPack Program specifically catered to the needs of high school students. You will research alternatives and work to develop a sustainable program that can be replicated in high schools throughout the community. You will gain experience in developing and implementing a program, networking with a variety of nonprofit agencies, training in volunteer management, active communication skills and exposure to the issues facing Southern Nevada youth. As an AmeriCorps member, you will serve 900 hours (20 hours/week), receive a living allowance of $8,100 and a post-service $2,360 Education Award, gain additional training opportunities and have a challenging, rewarding experience serving the community!

Member Duties : The member will manage the logistics required for volunteers to safely and efficiently pack BackPack bags for students in need. These logistics specifically require organizing volunteers, maintaining accurate inventory and overseeing distribution to schools. The member will use their year of service to identify and implement the best methods of making packing sessions most efficient and will prepare a short manual for managing BackPack volunteers at the end of their service. The member will work with school representatives, community stakeholders and high school students to determine how weekend food needs are currently being addressed in Clark County high schools and what the best method would be to expand such services to schools where the need is not being met.
