OSMRE VISTA Appalachian Voices Solar Initiative

Southwest Virginia Solar Initiative is a collaborative process that will plan for and implement a solar industry cluster and residential solar program in the heart of Virginia’s Coalfield region. The main vehicle for this project will be the creation of a Roadmap for Solar Development, created through an open, participatory and collaborative process. We believe that renewable energy will play a key role in the new economy of our region, and recognize the strategic value in pairing solar developments on formerly mined lands. A substantial part of our vision for the Solar Roadmap is to convert legacy coal lands and other post-mined land into productive solar energy areas. The Initiative will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders ranging from local Industrial Development Authorities, Educational Institutions and non profit organizations, as well as small/local business owners and interested community members. Our efforts will focus on maximizing local economic and social impact through developing local value chains that utilize existing industrial infrastructure associated with coal mining for the development of renewable energy. The initiative will follow a two-phase approach, based on current funding opportunities from the Appalachian Regional Commission’s Power Grant process. Phase one will be the collaborative creation of a Roadmap for Solar Development in Southwest Virginia. The Roadmap will lay out the opportunities, financing strategies and partnerships necessary to effectively develop a solar industry cluster in the region. Phase two will move to the implementation of the Roadmap. There is strong support for a residential solarization program in the region, and it is likely that such a program will be an integral aspect of the Roadmap. The VISTA will play an important role in planning and implementing the residential program, and will also focus their energy on solar projects that overlap with former coal mining lands.
