Partnering for Native Health
New Mexico Legal Aid has received a multi-state grant from AmeriCorps to implement Partnering for Native Health and host one-year AmeriCorps members to facilitate the medical-legal partnership (MLP) program serving American Indians and Alaskan Natives throughout the US. 14 members will be recruited throughout the US as follows: six attorneys in Alaska (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, Nome, Sitka), four attorneys in Oklahoma (Oklahoma City), and one attorney in each Arizona (Phoenix), Nebraska (Omaha), New Mexico (Albuquerque) and Utah (Montezuma Creek). The attorney selected will be housed at local legal aid agency. AmeriCorps Member will spring of 2017 and in place for one year. Start date is flexible. Members may be eligible to continue their service for two additional one-year terms. NOTE: Although you are not required to be bar licensed in the state you wish to practice, you are required to have received your JD. Member Duties : In partnership hospital or health clinic, AmeriCorps member will providing legal assistance to low-income American Indian and Alaskan Natives with health-harming legal needs. Legal work will include screening for housing/tenant, domestic violence, social security/disability and determining if patient/clients are eligible for services. In addition, AmeriCorps member will become part of the health care team and developing the relationship between legal services and health care teams, while working as a part of a nationwide AmeriCorps team.
