OSMRE VISTA Itmann Food Bank

Here in the heart of Appalachia, the warm and personal culture struggles to survive in the midst of poverty caused by lack of employment and out-migration. A sense of helplessness in the face of this poverty tends to weigh down the otherwise vibrant spirit of the poor. Young families are looking for ways of providing healthy and economical food for their children, as well as becoming more self-reliant. Part of the answer lies in the development of family gardens and, more importantly perhaps, the development of community gardens throughout the county. Unfortunately, the tradition of home gardens has slipped away and the notion of community gardens has not been encouraged. The local food pantry provides supplemental food to over 500 families each month. The VISTA member will work with these families, setting up educational programs on gardening, both at the home and community garden setting. The VISTA member will encourage the development of backyard gardens and the acquisition of community gardens through awareness raising projects, educational programs, and the direct provision of garden needs.
