Tribal Resilience: Oti Kaga

Enterprise is a national nonprofit dedicated to creating opportunity for low-and moderate-income people through affordable housing in diverse, thriving communities. Enterprise’s Rural and Native American Initiative (RNAI) works with tribal and community partners to create healthy, safe, green affordable housing and to increase opportunities for economic advancement for individuals and families. The RNAI is implementing a Cultural and Climate Resiliency AmeriCorps*VISTA Program to build the capacity of tribal partners to mitigate climate impacts on housing in a culturally responsive manner. One AmeriCorps*VISTA will be placed with Oti Kaga, Inc. located on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, specifically in Eagle Butte, SD. Oti Kaga, Inc. was established in 1993 as a Low Income Housing Tax Credit organization to serve the Reservation’s housing needs. Oti Kaga’s programs include single family lease and purchase, multifamily rental housing development, down payment and closing cost assistance and homebuyer counseling. The AmeriCorps*VISTA will Implementing a disaster preparedness and resilience program for Oti Kaga tenants and staff, partnering with local programs and organizations tapping into their staff knowledge and other resources and researching innovative strategies to best deal with recurring climate change issues for equipment and home structures. The AmeriCorps*VISTAs will have the opportunity to attend the Disaster Resilience Academy in Washington D.C. to learn about federal tools and resources, such as those available through the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit, to assess risk and counter the effects of extreme weather events and other climate-related impacts on communities and vulnerable populations, including low-income residents.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorpsVISTA will develop and maintain a safety action plan for emergency situations related to weather for all tenants on Oti Kaga’s properties and provide information to deal with extreme weather on a day to day basis for staff and tenants, including home safety, extreme weather protocol, home preventative maintenance, etc. Developing these initiatives will include exploring partnership collaborations throughout our community and other organizations; tribal, state, city, individuals, and private. The AmeriCorpsVISTA will research, develop, and maintain culturally sensitive material to promote healthy, safe, and preventative maintenance living environments for Oti Kaga, Inc. tenants and families. The AmeriCorps*VISTA will also support the day to day efforts of managing affordable housing properties.
