Employment Specialist for Youth (Fairbanks)

The lack of employment opportunities for youth transitioning from high school to the job market has been an ongoing issue, especially for those who experience a disability. Without long term employment, living independently is very difficult. Many youth, especially those from low income environments, lack many of the employment soft skills and work experience needed to acquire a full-time, career oriented job that will lead to long term success in the employment arena. The summer Pre-Employment Transition Services (PETS) program will be a concentrated 4-6 week summer program that will offer employment soft skills training and hands-on work experience at 6-12 different job sites around the Fairbanks North Star Borough. The VISTA will create curriculum, plan, implement, and evaluate a sustainable summer employment program. Over the winter and spring, the VISTA will develop an employment skills training curriculum and a summer 4-8 week job experience. Upon the summer PETS program completion, the VISTA will evaluate feedback from program participants, their parents, and partner businesses, organizations, and agencies to assess further program needs and develop a program guide and training plan. The overall goal of the VISTA project is to develop a sustainable program with curriculum, staff, and funding sources. ***Benefits include: Monthly living allowance ($1,333), relocation costs ($0.34/mile up to $1,000) and settling in allowance ($550) for members moving 50+ miles, health benefits, child care assistance, training, $275 cold weather gear allowance, and an Education Award ($5,815) or cash stipend ($1,500)***
