OSMRE VISTA Cumberland River Compact

We believe that sustainable communities are based on clean water and a healthy environment. For the past 19 years, we’ve worked cooperatively with local, state and federal agencies, farmers, businesses, technical professionals, local officials, neighborhood groups, and other watershed stakeholders who share this belief. We accomplish our mission by offering innovative tools and solutions to communities served. We do our work in a manner that does not judge or shame. The Compact operates on 2 principles. First we are non-confrontational and seek partnerships with governments, citizens groups and businesses. Second, we bring innovative solutions to water quality challenges. Our work emphasizes environmental education of the general public, professionals and young people. Our most effective teaching is through demonstration projects. Many of the practices the Compact originally demonstrated are now part of city codes. For example, requiring developers and builders to capture the first inch of rainfall off their sites, allowing rainwater to percolate into the ground rather than run-off into the storm/sewer systems. Many communities in the Cumberland River Basin are rapidly growing, especially the 7 counties in middle TN. This growth, when not managed properly, can cause rainfall to runoff from houses, office buildings, manufacturing sites, schools, roads and parking lots carrying soil, pesticides, fertilizers, oil, gas, animal waste and other pollutants into streams and rivers. Accommodating growth while ensuring the Basin’s rivers and streams are fishable and swimmable, particularly in urban areas, is challenging. The VISTA will expand the organization’s capacity to educate and demonstrate practices such as reducing urban heat islands and expanding the tree canopy that minimize the impact of development and build a more climate resilient region. Applications are reviewed and the position will be filled on a rolling basis. Please apply early to be considered.

Member Duties : Develop and implement an urban forestry program that works with communities to coordinate tree- planting and tree maintenance. Help develop a tree maintenance program that includes community residents participating in the care of these trees. The Compact is purchasing a watering truck and will work with interested low-income residents, training them in proper forestry and arborist practices. Expand the Green Alley Project, this program installs rain gardens in alleys in the city. Increase the number of riparian plantings throughout mid-Tennessee. Engage stream stewards in stream cleanups and adoptions. Assist with the development of both icreek.org and CumberlandRiverBasin.org, Compact’s websites that focus on citizen stewardship and water quality. Walk streams to identify restoration opportunities to remove small dams, identify pollutants and restore riparian buffers. Take the lessons learned in Nashville to improve urban waters into other rapidly growing cities in the basin.
