WSU VISTA - Coordinator for Health Support Volunteers

Douglas County Senior Services (DCSS) is a private, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that is the designated go-to place for senior resources in Lawrence and all of Douglas County. Launching a fresh face and rebranding of the organization in late 2016, DCSS will emerge as the central clearinghouse for information for and about seniors, as well as for partnering agencies and professionals. DCSS is implement a pilot project and working with Community Village Lawrence (CVL) to provide volunteer services so community members can remain in their home as they age. Due to requests from community members, their families, and supporting agencies, DCSS sees an opportunity to provide Health Support Volunteers that can become a model for other organizations. As DCSS’s VISTA, you will have the opportunity to investigate best practices for this role, develop a manual, implement training, and evaluate the results. You will meet community leaders and attend community events to let the community know about the additional services. Recruiting potential volunteers and additional members will develop or refine your skills in recruitment and public speaking. Documentation of the entire process is essential for sustainability and expansion of this project. A previous VISTA said the experience of developing a project from inception to fruition was extremely valuable in her next job search. The VISTA also said the chance to meet such a diverse, interesting group of members, volunteers, and community supporters, whom she would never have met otherwise, was an amazing opportunity.
