Tribal VISTA: Fond Du Lac Community College

FDLTCC, in collaboration with Fond du Lac Band, has begun a climate change initiative to support climate change preparedness within the Tribal community. In working to identify and remedy regional climate change concerns of human health, community infrastructure, and important cultural and natural resources, FDLTCC and its partners, are focusing on the protection of local natural resources such as stands of wild rice, traditional fish species, and culturally important tree and plant species, while combating changes in migration pathways, alarming declines in the moose population, and accelerated mercury methylation. Tribal leaders and staff have committed to reducing the Band’s contribution to the greenhouse gases that lead to warming, through developing and promoting projects and policies that advance sustainability and energy efficiency. As part of the AIHEC Native Climate Resilience Network (NCRN), FDLTCC works to integrate traditional, culturally specific interaction, and knowledge building processes with western science practice. The goal of NCRN is to expand engagement in climate change response issues. Applications are reviewed and the position will be filled on a rolling basis. Please apply early to be considered.

Member Duties : The TCU/VISTA will help with climate change focused initiatives based on community awareness. By helping to organize a framework for a citizen network and identifying specific response priorities, the VISTA will create a foundation for continued community engagement and positive progress. The VISTA member will develop and implement a climate issue response protocol, utilizing community stakeholders, which will increase resiliency when climate change impacts the community most. This protocol will protect the community against losses of property, economic opportunities, and traditional resources in a changing environment. The TCU/VISTA member will work with a regional Citizen Science Serendipity project to track climate change data, documenting and reporting on climate change within Tribal Lands, and provide accurate and effective information with regard to community needs, which in turn can be shared with other TCUs and Tribal communities.
