AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program (DV)

The AmeriCorps Urban Safety (AMUS) Program works to implement initiatives to increase public safety and decrease victimization in targeted neighborhoods throughout the City of Detroit. These initiatives are designed to: 1) improve levels of neighborhood guardianship; 2) reduce victim attractiveness and susceptibility; and 3) use technology for crime mapping and analysis, and for enhancing neighborhood communication on matters of public safety. To reduce victim attractiveness and susceptibility to domestic violence, the program works to increase access information and support services for survivors of intimate partner violence. The ultimate goal of this specific effort is to reduce domestic violence crime, particularly aggravated assault, by increasing the use of personal protection orders (PPOs). Members connect with survivors of domestic violence through referrals and outreach at police precincts. Following an informal assessment, members are trained to provide resources as requested and appropriate, including assistance in completing a court petition for PPO and submitting petitions to the Court. Members receive 40 hours of domestic violence training prior to assignment to a police precinct, including procedures to filing PPO petitions and show-cause motions to enforce PPOs.

Member Duties : Members will serve to increase access to information and support services for survivors of intimate partner violence. To reduce domestic violence crime, members will (1) share information about rights and options, (2) develop personalized safety plans, (3) file petitions for PPOs, and (4) increase access to criminal justice and social service resources. Members will connect with survivors of domestic violence through (1) follow up phone calls after initial police contact, (2) police referral while on scene, and (3) walk-in referrals at the precinct. The member will conduct a needs assessment (e.g., is the victim requesting a PPO; are there immediate steps the victim can take to increase their safety). For survivors that wish to file for a PPO, members will assist with completing the court petition and gathering documents at the precinct. Members will submit petitions to the Court.
