National: Center for Advancing Holocaust Survivor Care, DC

The JFNA Center for Advancing Holocaust Survivor Care administers grants to develop innovations in trauma informed care for Holocaust Survivors to a current cohort of 23 sub-grantee agencies and an anticipated 10 additional agencies. Many leading nonprofits in the Aging Services Network have partnered with JFNA to disseminate resources with the idea that lessons learned from JFNA’s program will be transferred across the sector to benefit all older adults who may have been victims of trauma. The Jewish Federations of North America serves hundreds of communities across the continent and Federations are leaders in planning for the needs of older adults. All of the Center’s sub-grantees target the most economically and socially vulnerable Holocaust Survivors. Approximately 25% of Holocaust survivors are in poverty, but among those receiving social services, the poverty level is higher, approximately 85% in some areas. Through the Center’s development of a national platform to disseminate innovative care models, the effects of poverty and trauma can be alleviated for all older adults served by sub-grantees, including the Survivor community. The VISTAs goal is to build a national technical assistance platform that will ultimately cull the most effective, innovative, replicable and sustainable models of trauma-informed care and disseminate those models to the broader Aging Services Network to develop a national culture of trauma informed care for older adults. The VISTA is instrumental in capacity building and information dissemination to organizations serving the general older adult population. This involves sharing the person-centered, trauma-informed innovations developed through JFNA’s program with the broader Aging Services Network. By sharing successful models, we will build their capacity to design and implement models of their own.
