VCC AmeriCorps Academic Support Specialist - CCV, Winooski
 
 
 
This position is part of The Vermont Campus Compact (VCC) AmeriCorps Pathways Program, hosted by the Vermont Higher Education Council (VHEC). VCC AmeriCorps is a state-wide AmeriCorps program designed to partner with college campuses and community partners across Vermont in order to A) increase college aspirations and readiness among low-income and rural youth, and B) increase college persistence, retention, and success among first-generation and otherwise underrepresented college students. The Community College of Vermont, a Vermont State College, supports and challenges all students in meeting their educational goals through an abiding commitment to access, affordability, and student success. In this context, the goals of the Academic Support Specialist are to integrate, coordinate and provide direct service connected to our academic mentoring program.

Member Duties : • Support students in a manner consistent with the mission, purposes of mentoring, and desired outcomes for students at CCV Learning Centers: o Provide a safe, supportive learning environment; o Nurture holistic student development by promoting success in school and life; o Support students to identify learning strengths; o Facilitate student confidence to overcome challenges and value themselves as college-level learners. • Integrate academic support services into existing CCV structures, such as developmental and first semester seminar courses. • Provide small group and one-on-one mentoring of successful student skills and habits. • Support student growth, development, and proficiency with assignments and concepts from a range of “gateway” and first year courses. • Model college-level study skills and successful student habits. • Refer students to additional academic supports and resources. • Classroom presentations related to study skills and college success.
