Step by Step Substance Abuse Prevention Program

At the moment, despite the severity of the substance abuse problem in West Virginia, there are almost no resources being utilized to actually combat the problem at the level where it would have the most impact- the individual. Earlier this year Governor Tomblin passed a law targeting doctors and pharmacies who overprescribe, but the bill failed to address the issues causing people to become addicted in the first place by using prescription drugs as recreational venues to escape from the issues of poverty, that then turn around and contribute to poverty when workplaces cannot find enough qualified candidates who can pass a simple pre-employment drug test. While great strides have been taken to reduce the amount of substance in our state, more work needs to be done on a local level to help mobilize, educate, and organize local communities to promote local responses to this epidemic. A Substance Abuse VISTA would have the capacity to more readily identify national and regional models of substance abuse prevention and other measures that communities could take to combat substance abuse and its surrounding issues. The Substance Abuse VSTA would also be able to assist communities in identifying resources already available that could assist them in decreasing the number of people going through substance abuse issues through a series of statewide community forums around drug abuse.
