Education & STEM Partners (in Sitka)

Sitka Sound Science Center is dedicated to science research and science education in Alaska. Our young and growing non profit is staffed by energetic people passionate about science research and science education. SSSC VISTA will be an active part of our team. This position will help promote partnerships that enhance educational opportunities across disciplines including science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. The program will build on a fledgling group of community organizations, coming together to share resources and ideas. SSSC has a small aquarium and salmon hatchery that are used as educational tools. This position will help our organization capitalize on these facilities bringing in an inter-generational, diverse group of people. The VISTA will build and expand on partnerships with institutes of higher education that are interested in community engagement in science, and opportunities for undergraduate. SSSC is part of a neighborhood association that is revitalizing an old college campus. This position will strengthen the bonds within this group of non profits and look for opportunities to work together that contribute to the revitalization of the campus and the education of the community. Being a VISTA at the Sitka Sound Science Center means being part of a fun, active, engaged staff that values community and community activism. We are committed to creating a culture of science that includes making science an economic engine for our island town. The VISTA should have strong communication skills and willing to use a variety of tools - phone, email, meeting in person- to develop informal and formal science education programs. This is a job for someone who enjoys meeting new people and finding common ground. Sitka, Alaska is a good place for those who enjoy the outdoors. With some of the best kayaking and trails available in Alaska, VISTAs can spend free time enjoying the natural surroundings.
