Community Stewards VISTA Trips for Kids - Chattanooga (SECC)

Southeast Conservation Corps was Founded by AmeriCorps VISTA alumna, Brenna Kelly, and has been in operation since 2013. The program began with one Youth Conservation Crew of 7, and is now beginning its 4th season which will be serving approximately 90 adult and youth conservation crew members, interns and local middle school students through SECC’s Trips for Kids bicycle and mentorship program. The VISTA will focus on creating more Trips for Kids (TFK) earn-a-bike opportunities for local youth. Currently SECC serves approximately 8–16 youth per year in a mountain bike and conservation service program. Each TFK program engages 6-8 youth for a 5-month period. Within the structure of the TFK program, youth commit to weekly bike rides guided by staff and community mentors, and monthly conservation service projects. Ride days are progressive-skills based and teach the building blocks of bike transportation on city streets and recreation on local public lands. Through structured rides and lessons youth are exposed to hands-on, placed-based educational activities and consistent positive mentorship, which are building blocks needed to transition out of poverty and into constructive opportunities. TFK rides are the vehicle to impart interpersonal skills such as commitment, positive communication, and fortitude, while teaching tangible sciences such as physics via bicycle gears and environmental science through service projects like watershed restoration. The VISTA will also build community engagement around the program by identifying and enlisting dedicated ride mentors, sustaining financial benefactors and additional youth partners. These relationships will create more community-based partnerships with individuals and businesses interested in connecting with Chattanooga’s low-income youth communities to broaden their exposure to economic opportunities. Applications are reviewed and the position will be filled on a rolling basis. Please apply early to be considered.
