Rural Action VISTA

From 2016 to 2017, Rural Action hosted a VISTA team dedicated to mapping the challenges faced by Appalachian Ohioans, including housing, infrastructure, food access, health, and other issues. As well, they surveyed the assets and resources that exist in the region, including numerous nonprofit and civil society organizations. The purpose of this exercise was to lay the groundwork upon which a new regional VISTA program could be organized to impact the most distressed counties of Appalachia Ohio by building healthy futures and economic resilience. To build upon this initial preparatory stage, this VISTA will plan, organize, and assist in the development of a regional VISTA program designed to build the capacity of organizations and communities to leverage their assets and address acute social issues. This will be accomplished by: 1) Analyzing the priority organizations listed in the asset map report and work with VISTA and Rural Action to identify future VISTA host sites; 2) Work with VISTA and Rural Action to create and develop program protocols, reporting and tracking functions, and a communication plan; 3) Along with VISTA and Rural Action, develop a new VISTA orientation program with relevant speakers and topics; 4) In partnership with VISTA and Rural Action, compile a budget for the proposed program and ensure that potential host sites are aware of the match requirements; 5) Carefully document the development of the pending VISTA program in ongoing consultation with VISTA and Rural Action. At the conclusion of the 2018-2019 term of service, a high-quality, rural-focused, regionally-based VISTA program framework will have been developed. All necessary component parts, including a budget, protocols, list of host sites, and orientation will be in place, ready for VISTA to launch a new Appalachian Ohio capacity-building program across a distressed region of Ohio.
