Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance - MLP of Southern Illinois

MLPSI was established in 2002 and was the first rural Medical-Legal Partnership in the country. With the goal of improving the health outcomes of our patient/clients by alleviating legal stressors, MLPSI helps hundreds of low-income persons each year with issues such as end-of-life planning, Social Security Disability, public benefits issues such as the receipt of food stamps, family law issues, etc. The partnership is based at the Southern Regional Office of Land of Lincoln and is partnered with Southern Illinois Healthcare’s three hospitals and multiple clinics including Logan Primary Care and the Cancer Institute. MLPSI also works with Shawnee Health System, the Federally Qualified Healthcare Center in our area. The goal of the VISTA position is to enhance MLPSI to better serve low-income persons by becoming a part of the culture of our medical partners by evaluating and meeting their needs and through a physical presence in one or more medical facilities. The VISTA will develop competency in advocacy areas most accessed by MLPSI referrals and learn the basics of the MLPSI partnership; take steps towards additional MLPSI integration in the medical facilities owned by our medical partner; and work with the MLPSI supervisor and coordinator on how to evaluate this integration.

Member Duties : The SRO MLP VISTA will be responsible for the continued development of the MLPSI. This will include working onsite at medical facilities as well as working to obtain better referrals aimed at the improvement of health. Duties would include: • Developing competency in advocacy areas most accessed by MLPSI referrals. • Meeting with partners at SIH to learn the healthcare system and culture. • Developing a working knowledge of each MLPSI referral site. • Gathering data and analyzing from each MLPSI referral site. • Working directly on cases obtained through referral. • Developing creative and manageable solutions to address the needs that are discovered during our expansion efforts.
