OSMRE VISTA Utah State University Eastern

Utah State University Eastern (USUE) is located in Price, Utah. It is a regional campus of Utah State University and has a dual focus for providing vocational-technical programs and traditional associate and bachelor degrees. The mission of the college is “Transforming Lives.” Our department, Center for Workforce Development (CWD), supports this mission by “Helping those who are unemployed become employed, and helping those that are underemployed gain skillsets that will provide a life-sustaining income.” USUE serves the Castle County region that includes Carbon and Emery counties. The region is experiencing a significant downturn in the fossil fuels industry, specifically coal. Carbon and Emery counties have relied heavily on the coal industry as the base for economic drivers in the region. Since 2010, thousands of people have moved out of the area or have been laid off. The current unemployment rate for Carbon County is 6.0%. In Emery County, it is 7.2% compared to the national average of 5%. Utah's unemployment rate is even lower at 3.5%. By focusing on training and new skills for the unemployed/underemployed, the region can diversify and grow. Outreach to high school students about the value of additional education will help change the culture of the area. Applications are reviewed and the position will be filled on a rolling basis. Please apply early to be considered.

Member Duties : First, the VISTA will be focused on business training and skills diversification. Coal mining job losses have hit this area hard and there is a need to transition into different sectors. Additional help is needed to reach out and work with local companies to help their employees receive additional training that will help the company either diversify into another industry or become competitive in a global market. Second, the VISTA will help coordinate economic events for the benefit of the area, including business conferences, job fairs, & innovation summits. The VISTA's role will help facilitate new business development in an area that needs new jobs outside of the coal mining sector. The VISTA will work to educate youth on STEM career paths, unrelated to coal mining work, and also help organize job fair events for STEM careers in the area.
