ILCC-Columbia College
The VISTA will work with Columbia College Chicago’s Director of Community Schools. Hours will primarily be Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm, but a few nights and/or weekends may be required. The VISTA will support the Community School program. The program is a partnership between Columbia College Chicago and the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) designed to enhance student learning and development in Elementary and High Schools. The focus of the majority of these efforts is learning in and through the arts. The primary delivery method is out of school time programs, Responsibilities of the VISTA may include: recruitment; research, evaluation and data analysis; support of showcases, activities and events for students, youth, and families; and development/implementation of special programs and activities. Goals and Priorities: Elimination of Poverty CCC’s Community Schools program partners with schools in that have high “at-risk” youth populations. The percentages that receive free and reduced lunch is high – most over 80%. State assessments indicate that many students are below targets for meeting standards. Our primary goal is to improve outcomes for these young people. Community Schools has a three pronged strategy to achieve this 1) to improve academic achievement by expanding opportunities for learning; 2) to engage parents as partners; 3) to support students social emotional learning. The Vista will work with Community Schools, to support and enhance these programs. Sustaining the work This project is a continuation of work from our previous VISTA c, with a focus on expanding and deepening the work and connections. Columbia College is an Arts and Media college and we are currently in a strategic planning process which emphasizes Community Engagement. Our hope is to continue to develop systems, processes and strategies that will guide us in that endeavor with the support of our VISTA.
