Kids on Bikes, School and Family Outreach Coordinator

Kids on Bikes uses the bicycle as a tool for creating healthy bodies, healthy communities, and a healthy environment. We provide opportunities for kids in low-income neighborhoods to make good choices, all aimed at empowering youth to utilize the bike for healthy living and transportation. Our key pillars are to equip, educate, and empower children and their families to make bicycling an important part of their lives. Over the past decade, Kids on Bikes has become the expert at finding solutions to getting kids, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, to be able to bicycle on a regular basis. We know that kids need access to bicycles but furthermore, they need access to ongoing repairs. They need to know how to be safe and they need to know how and where to ride in their own neighborhoods. We accomplish this through the establishment of neighborhood bike libraries, through afterschool bike clubs, and through summer camps. One of the goals set forth in our strategic plan is to activate neighborhoods from within. We believe that in order to enact change, it must come from the community where children live and go to school. We use our newly opened community bike center, the Pedal Station, as a centralized hub to process donated bikes and distribute them to organized programs in partnership with schools and community centers. And then we train leaders from that school and community who know the kids and families, know the streets and parks, and know the cultural norms for their particular school population.

Member Duties : The School and Family Outreach Coordinator VISTA will work closely with the Executive Director to develop partnerships with schools, train volunteers to lead bike rides and safety education, and develop family engagement efforts with the goal of leveraging partners and volunteers so that more kids ride bikes. These schools will span Colorado Springs in many schools serving disadvantaged and lower-income families. With the support of Kids on Bikes staff, the VISTA will help recruit and train volunteers to lead guided bike rides with the kids and to teach bike safety and mechanics.
