2016/17 STEM Scholars Program

LET’S GO Boys and Girls, Inc. works to inspire and support underserved students to become STEM professionals. We partner with schools and youth organizations, offering STEM to their students and providing materials, training, and support necessary to implement fun, hands-on STEM curricular activities. Once students have participated in multiple STEM programs and demonstrated interest and aptitude, they are considered STEM Scholars. We provide holistic support to these promising STEM Scholars, connecting them with hard and soft skill resources they need to overcome barriers on the path to STEM careers. Outcome evaluation is an important part of our model. We build “STEM histories” for students we serve, documenting their progress through the LET’S GO STEM pipeline, and guiding them on pathways out of poverty and towards post-secondary education and careers in STEM fields. This project will establish a system for providing students with targeted hard and soft skill interventions, supporting them as they persist and develop a ‘sense of identity’ integrating STEM, career, and self. Guided by feedback from community needs assessments, we will integrate the Baltimore STEM Ecosystem project initiated by the Maryland Out of School Time Network with our efforts by aligning STEM resources with other resources aimed at developing soft skills (including communication, dress, goal setting, etc.) which often come from relationships with role models and mentors. This project will also establish a virtual STEM Scholar Academy for connecting participating students across Baltimore city. This position is sponsored by the Maryland Out of School Time (MOST) Network’s VISTA Program. MOST VISTA members create a community that is passionate about youth development and participate in extensive professional development throughout their service year. *Applications accepted on a rolling basis*
